There are many symbolic rituals that may be used in a wedding ceremony. Each wedding ceremony is unique. Some couples choose a small number of rituals such as giving away of the bride or ring ceremony. Other couples may choose quite a few rituals such as a family sand unity ceremony, memories of loved ones with candle lighting, or blessing of the rings.
On the weekend we had a delightful symbolic sand unity ceremony which included the grandparents, parents and child. Each set of grandparents were given a colour, the parents were given a colour and the child’s colour was pink. A beautiful ritual and a lovely symbolic sand vase to keep. The vase will hold a special place in the couple’s heart and home as a memory of their wedding day and a blending of their two families. (picture of the vase below)
Wording during the sand ceremony can be diverse depending on the involvement, but may sound something like this:
As the sand is poured into the family vase, the individual containers of sand will no longer exist, but will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage and family be united as one for all of your days. Please unite your sand.
