Jumping the Broom

Jumping the Broom ritual

A fun ritual incorporated into some wedding ceremonies is “Jumping the Broom”.  With roots back to African and Celtic cultures, the couple literally jump over a broom to signify crossing the threshold and their entrance into a new life, thereby symbolically “sweeping away” their former single lives and entering into a new life as a married couple. Brooms are often decorated with meaningful objects or mementos from the couple and their families. You can buy a classic “witches” broom at Bunnings type stores and if you Google Images “jumping the broom” pics will come up with ideas how to decorate.
