Many couples exchange rings on their wedding day. The custom of giving and exchanging wedding rings comes from ancient Egypt. The Egyptians believed the circular and unbroken shape of the ring symbolised an eternity of love, a love that had no beginning and no end. The third finger on the left hand was chosen for the wedding ring because the Egyptians and Romans believe it contained a vein that ran straight to the heart and wearing the ring prevented the love from escaping.
The ring ceremony is not a legal part of the wedding ceremony, however, the majority of couples will want to exchange rings. Occasionally, only one party may want to receive a ring and sometimes there may be no ring to exchange.
Usually a ring verse is recited after the celebrant as opposed to reading of a palm card, as the couple need their hands free for the ring exchange.
